About Lipika Goyal

LIPIKA GOYAL is the Director of the Gastrointestinal Oncology program at the Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI), where she also leads the Gastrointestinal Oncology clinical research group. Through her research, Dr. Goyal focuses on hepatocellular carcinoma/cholangiocarcinoma and other gastrointestinal malignancies. In 2023, she was named “Researcher of the Year” by the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Goyal holds an MD from Harvard University and completed her internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, earning an MPhil in development studies. In 2001 she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in the biological basis of development from University of Pennsylvania, where she was a University Scholar.

Dr. Goyal completed her fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Cancer Center and then began a position at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center as a Gastrointestinal Medical Oncologist in 2013. She went on to become the Lead of the Liver Cancer Research Program at the Mass General Cancer Center in 2020.

Dr. Goyal has done research with the International Rescue Committee in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, initiated a baseline study in Ghana for a trial for a proposed anti-malarial drug, and conducted malnutrition research in India. At Oxford University, she volunteered as a youth

club leader for young refugees and a visitor to detained asylum seekers through a charity organization called Asylum Welcome.

A Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow and the daughter of two naturalized US citizens from India, her family now lives in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.
