About Andre Ye

The child of two graduate students from China, Andre Ye was born in West Virginia. By the time Andre was one his family had moved to Redmond, Washington, just outside of Seattle. In Redmond, Andre was immersed not only in his Chinese heritage and traditions but also became closely acquainted with those of his classmates’ varied cultures as many of them came from immigrant backgrounds as well.

Andre was fortunate to be exposed to Redmond’s atmosphere of technological innovation from a young age and was inspired by his father’s graduate work in neural networks. Andre self-studied in the area and eventually wrote two books on the subject with Apress Springer Nature.

Eager to accelerate his education, Andre enrolled in the University of Washington at 15 through the Robinson Center’s Early Entrance Program. Learning from a diverse array of professors and classmates, Andre’s intellectual interests greatly diversified, pursuing majors in computer science and philosophy and minors in math and history.

Andre has published several research articles spanning a range of topics in computer science, philosophy, and literature—including a new method for clinical image annotation (winning honorable mention for best paper at AAAI Human Computation), probing moral concepts in large language models, and understanding AI as an intellectual tool for philosophers. For his studies and research, he is graduating as a Phi Beta Kappa, Mary Gates, and honors scholar, and has been named the philosophy department’s annual outstanding undergraduate scholar and a national finalist for the Computing Research Association’s outstanding undergraduate researcher award.

Andre will pursue a PhD in computer science at MIT. He wants to develop applications for computing — especially artificial intelligence technologies — in the textual social sciences, including philosophy, history, and literature.
