About Sudeb Dalai
Sudeb Dalai, MD, PhD, is an infectious disease physician–scientist and biotechnology executive specializing in advanced diagnostics for complex, life-threatening infections. He is currently Vice President of Medical Affairs at Delve Bio, where he leads clinical strategy, evidence generation, and physician engagement for metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS)–based infectious disease diagnostics.
Sudeb is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at Stanford University School of Medicine and an attending physician at Stanford Hospital. His clinical work focuses on complex and critically ill patients with severe infections, including sepsis/critical illness and infections in immunocompromised hosts.
At Delve Bio, Sudeb directs the Clinical Microbial Sequencing Board (CMSB) program and oversees medical affairs activities supporting the Delve Detectâ„¢ portfolio of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) assays. His work centers on translating cutting-edge genomic technologies into clinically actionable tools, with a particular focus on culture-negative infections, rare and fastidious pathogens, and urgent diagnostic dilemmas. Previously, he held medical and scientific leadership roles at Karius, Adaptive Biotechnologies, and Roche, where he contributed to the development and clinical adoption of novel genomic and molecular diagnostic platforms. He has led and co-authored multiple clinical case series, abstracts, and peer-reviewed publications highlighting the real-world impact of mNGS in infectious diseases.
Sudeb’s research background spans virology, molecular epidemiology, and global health. His graduate and postdoctoral work, conducted with the late Dr. David Katzenstein, focused on HIV/AIDS virology, antiretroviral therapy, and drug resistance, including extensive field research in Zimbabwe, Uganda, and South Africa. He has received research support from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the National Institutes of Health.
Sudeb earned a BS in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, MIT’s highest undergraduate leadership award, and served as President of his class. He completed his MD and MS degrees at Stanford University School of Medicine and his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at UC San Diego and fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at Stanford.
Born in Marshall, Missouri and raised in rural Nevada, Missouri, Sudeb was valedictorian of his high school class and a state champion in speech and debate. His parents immigrated to the United States from India in 1975. He now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he works at the intersection of clinical medicine, genomics, and biotechnology. His career reflects a longstanding commitment to bridging medicine, science, and technology to improve outcomes for patients with life-threatening infections.
